The Dogs of Thrace Still Need Their Warriors
In the ancient land of Thrace, strength was something to be proud of. Warriors rode across its plains, and even Ares, the god of war, and Dionysus, the god of wine and wildness, were said to have a special fondness for this beautiful corner of the world. Today the battles are smaller, but they are no less important.
In Didymoteicho, three volunteers care for more than 250 animals, mostly dogs, with a handful of cats among them. Beyond the shelter gates, they feed over 200 more dogs they simply have no room to house. Every day means food, medicine, vet visits, rescues, cleaning, healing, and, whenever possible, finding a safe home.
There is no army behind them. So we are calling for a new kind of Thracian warrior. You don't need armour, a spear, or the blessing of Ares. You can volunteer your time, help spread the word, foster or adopt, or support the shelter financially to help us care for these fierce little cuties. Sure, they're a far cry from the underworld's guard dog, Kerberos, in size, but not in loyalty. For sometimes the strongest thing you can do is protect something smaller than yourself.

A Place for Hope
We have so many happy dogs here now, and that's something worth celebrating. Dogs that once arrived frightened, hungry, injured, or simply unwanted are today fed, treated, cared for, and waiting for the best part: a warm home of their own.
We also have dogs who are still healing and still need treatment, and the good news is, right now, we can give them that care. We're proud of that. What we need is a little help to keep it going. This shelter is a place of hope, but it's also a place with limited space, so every dog who's adopted opens the door for us to welcome another one in.
For us, home matters. In Greece, the hearth has always meant more than just a fire in the house. Hestia, goddess of the hearth, stood for the home itself: safety, welcome, and a place where you belong. That is what we hope for these dogs.
Dogs, too, have an ancient place in Greek myth as the secret companions of Hecate, one of the goddesses most honored by Zeus, the King of Olympus, himself. It feels fitting, because so many of the dogs here are standing at exactly that crossroads between one life and the next: a hopeful one.
They don't need very much. Just one person willing to open the door and let them cross that threshold. Give one dog a home, and you give us the space to save another, and who knows, you might earn yourself a place in the Elysian Fields for your kindness.

To Dutch Lady
Kanga was born in an abandoned home. At barely two months old, she and her six siblings, along with their mother, were rescued. Following that rescue operation, these seven adorable puppies and their sweet mother began their new lives somewhere safe.
That is important to us. The dogs in our care are vaccinated, protected and, when they are old enough, neutered. We want every dog leaving the shelter to start the next part of its life healthy, safe and ready for a home. Last year, Kanga got that chance. She travelled all the way from Greece to the Netherlands, where she was first fostered then quickly adopted and given a new name: Lotte.
Today, Lotte lives the kind of life we hope for every dog here. She has a home, people of her own and all the ordinary little things that make a dog’s life a good one. And the space this wonderful little girl left behind became space for another rescue.
Lotte is only one dog, but she is also proof of what can happen when someone decides to say 'YES'. There are many more Lottes still waiting here, including her brothers and sisters.
